If you are one of the many people concerned with the effect of ageing on their skin then these 3 simple S rules will help prolong your youthful appearance.

SUNSCREEN - It has been shown many times that the sun’s rays are one of the biggest causes of skin ageing there is. So, wear sunscreen every day. Whether it’s raining, snowing or the sun is shining! A minimum of SPF15 is sufficient for every day wear and one application every morning will make a big difference. A higher SPF is preferable for the sunnier months, with anything up to SPF50 being needed and also more frequent application than just once a day. Make sure the SPF is a full spectrum sunscreen, to ensure that you’re skin is protected with UVA and UVB filters!

SMOKING - Come on people, we all know it contributes to lines and wrinkles. It also depletes your body of vitamin C, which is vital for maintaining collagen levels in the skin. It’s a terrible habit that has absolutely no physical benefits at all. It causes lines around your eyes because of the constant squinting action when taking a puff. It causes premature lines around the mouth too from the constant pursing lip action. It dulls your skin due to the restriction of oxygen. If your skin is more important to you, there’s only one thing you should do, give it up.

STRESS - We can’t help having stress in our lives, but it’s how we DEAL with it that counts. Some people can handle stress more than others and it’s likely that the more stress you deal with the quicker you’ll age. The ‘elevenses’ in-between the eyebrows could be caused by constant frowning from worry, or even frowning whilst sat at the computer screen for that matter. But, I think what’s important here is that one needs to make time for themselves. That time might be having a weekly beauty treatment, going out for a long walk, practicing yoga or pursuing hobbies. In fact almost anything will help, as long as it includes time to relax and creates ‘me‘ time to clear the head and recharge the batteries.

There are many other contributing factors to skin ageing; alcohol, environmental factors, diet, genetics all play a part. It’s inevitable that we are going to age, but by thinking about the three S rules every day we can play a big part in slowing it down.
